I met a few of Mr P&J's work friends for dim sum this afternoon at Fong Huong Palace on Canyon Road in Beaverton just west of the Beaverton Car Wash. We met our group at 12:30pm on a Sunday afternoon.
The place was medium sized and at best, half full . The ambiance wasn't, especially for a palace. Employees were very attentive (2 or 3 at a time) and kept the carts coming but at times there were language amiscommunications, easily rectified. Friendly people who asked us to come back again.
Everything was very fresh and hot. The steamed dumplings including Shanghai, beef shu mai and pork shu mai, ha gow, ha gow with bay scallops and another with corn (I'm sure they're not called ha gow with those additions). Nice sticky rice pocket in lotus with more than usual meat pieces inside (I saw it without the leaf too), great BBQ pork pastries. I'm not a fan of rice noodles but these were spicy enough to make them tolerable. I didn't try the shimp patty in green pepper or what looked like fried shrimp balls in shredded noodles. Stuffed tofu was very good as was the ginger chicken wrapped in foil. This version was more flavorful than Fong Chong's, the only other place I've had them. This chicken seemed to be marinated in soy before steaming with sliced ginger. We enjoyed the baked hom bow with a sweet topping and the sesame balls with sweet bean paste and the pot stickers.
The only two I didn't care were the stuffed eggplant (tasteless) and, surprisingly, the egg tarts. Texture of the dough and custard were fine, but there was an off taste to the custard which several people didn't like. The sauces weren't the best I've had - one creamy white sauce kept going around the lazy Susan and didn't seem to go with anything, the Szechuan dumplings' sauce was very sweet and there was no dipping sauce for the pot stickers.
We really stuffed ourselves and the bill came to $14 a person plus gratuity - the best price I've paid for a big dim sum lunch for years. I took a long nap shortly after coming home.
I searched for a thread for Fong Huong Palace but didn't see one. If this post should be moved please, be my guest!
